Registration of Traditional Handloom Products of West Bengal under the Geographical Indication of Goods Registration & Protection) Act,1999
With view to protect the misuse of the unique technique of weaving and the fame of the exquisite variety of Traditional Handloom Products of the State and to build up a Commercial Brand all the exquisite variety of Traditional Handloom Products of the State would be registered under the Geographical Indication of Goods Registration & Protection) Act,1999
Applications have already been filled to the appropriate authority in respect of Shantipuri, Baluchari Sarees, Tangail Jamdani, Tangail and Dhanekhali Saree. Of which Shantipuri Saree has already been registered under G.I. Act,1999.
Preparatory works in respect of Garad, Korial and Muslin are under progress.
Spinning mills under the administrative control of Msset Department
There are six spinning mills under the administrative control of MSSET Deptt. Out of six spinning mills – Kangsabati Coop. Spinning Mills has been producing acrylic yarn while other spinning mills including Tamralipta Coop.Spinning Mills produce cotton hank yarn and cone yarn for Handloom, Powerloom & Hosiery industries.
Equity to Apex/Central marketing organisations
At present there is only one central marketing organization for rendering marketing support to Primary Weavers Coop. societies and handloom artisans working outside cooperatives, namely The West Bengal State Handloom Weavers Coop. Society Ltd. (Tantuja). They procure handloom fabrics from coop. societies and artisans and sell the products though its outlets. To carry out the activity Tantuja is given financial support in the form of Equity.
